New Music Of The Day: IDLES Namecheck Mary Berry On Punk Anthem ‘Well Done’

‘Why don’t you get a job? Even Mary Berry’s got a job’

Whether IDLES had some insider knowledge on the going-ons at The Great British Bake Off before they penned ‘Well Done’, or are just really good at guessing – we’ll never know. Either way, it’s a visceral anthem that’s timed weirdly well for 2016’s madness.

Clad in all-white outfits and underpants, the Bristol punks have thrown up a decidedly cutting indictment of the “advice from the Saturday night TV congregation and the ivory tower fucks” to the “working classes”. It’s full of phlegm, anger and plenty of pot shots at soon-to-be former baking judge Mary Berry too. ‘Well Done’ has already been spun by esteemed radio tastemakers Annie Mac and Huw Stephens on their shows, and here’s what frontman Joe Talbot had to say about the track:

“Never in my lifetime has the class divide been so violently apathetic and apparent in equal measure and so ‘Well Done’ is a simple riposte to a lifetime of advice from the Saturday night TV congregation and the ivory tower fucks that think it necessary to send “helpful” quips in the direction of the working classes. The performance video is what we hoped for: a glorious and elaborate hoax of what we are live. You can’t capture our gigs unless you’re there. That’s it. We are one of the best live bands you’ll ever see and a video will not capture that in any way whatsoever so we dressed in white to capture our inner barn owls. It was a fucking mess but we enjoyed working under the roof of the Arnolfini.”
