NME Ones To Watch 2016: Sheer Mag

Every day this week NME is introducing one of its ones to watch acts for 2016. Sheer Mag are one of the most exciting propositions in rock

Why They’re Worthy:
Frontwoman Tina Halladay is simply rock’s greatest new vocalist – a true couldn’t-give-a-fuck powerhouse of a singer with a Motown-worthy vocal range and Beth Ditto’s stage presence. Her bandmates, meanwhile, create precision-perfect punk rock mini classics, kind of like AC/DC when they were more comfortable playing the Marquee Club than Wembley Stadium. It’s ballsy and brutal US punk rawk with
heavenly riffs.

Key Track:
The epic ‘Fan The Flames’ is a rock’n’roll anthem that’s up there with the best of this decade.

2016 Prospects:
Technically they’re still unsigned – but only because they’ve rejected all label approaches. They’re notoriously prickly interviewees too, although when NME caught up with them for a rare chat at SXSW last March we found them to be great company. “We record everything ourselves so it gets kinda crazy,” Tina told us about their work ethic, adding: “It wears thin on our patience for each other – so does touring, but it’s fun to be around so many people all the time.” All signs suggest they’ve been working on new material, which they may well release themselves. Whatever they do next is highly-anticipated.
