It struck me that I need to tip these guys, Alabama Shakes as soon as possible. They were great at CMJ, as I previously blogged, but you need to hear some of their recorded stuff as well as see the live vids I put up the other day.
It's pretty much nailed on that someone's gonna sign them really soon, and I hear they have a load of songs already in the bag as well as these four from their debut EP:
They're from Alabama, funnily enough, and they used to be called The Shakes. I interviewed Arctic Monkeys recently for NME (it's out next week) and Alex Turner put me onto them, saying he'd seen them in Nashville when the Monkeys played there a few weeks back. A few days after that, a spate of label people started emailing about them too. By the time of their only CMJ show, at the Bowery Ballroom, they were the talk of the festival.
They totally slayed it too.
While they're probably not about to oust the likes of king Krule, Azealia Banks and ASAP Rocky from hipster lists (their sound is refined to say the least), I don't really think you can ignore a band who write songs as good as 'Hold On' and 'I Found You'.
I think these are my favourite things by them though, roughly recorded at some in-store somewhere:
