Star Wars Ep 8: ships, lightsabers, costumes and music for The Last Jedi

All the audiovisual info you need about Star Wars VIII

The Last Jedi arrives in UK cinemas on December 14 – making it about four months until we see the final product. Loads of info about the new episode has been revealed – we’ve already got a page about The Last Jedi news and casting information, and another one with the Episode 8 trailer and poster info. This one is where you’ll find information about props, costumes, music, and other audiovisual aspects of the new film. Let’s dive in…

What lightsabers will we see in The Last Jedi?

Luke’s lightsaber

We don’t know if Luke will actually use a lightsaber. In the much-discussed trailer for The Last Jedi, Luke says: “It’s time for the Jedi to end” – and he didn’t seem that excited when Rey offered it to him at the end of The Force Awakens. He may still have his green one from Return of the Jedi. Luke actor Mark Hamill was recently asked how it feels to pick a lightsaber up again, to which he responded: “It’s frightening. And who knows? Do I pick one up again or don’t I?” We shall see, Luke. We shall see.

Rey’s lightsaber

Rey is likely to use the same saber she brought to Luke in The Force Awakens. It once belonged to Anakin Skywalker, then to his son Luke, and Rey used it in Episode VII. For a short time there was speculation that in this film she would somehow be using Obi-Wan’s old lightsaber, after a leaked shot from the forthcoming videogame Star Wars Battlefront 2 appeared to show her with a lightsaber that had a similar hilt to Obi-Wan’s. However, this has been confirmed as a bug and official promo material shows Rey continuing to use Luke’s old lightsaber. See its many owners use it in the below clip:

Kylo Ren’s lightsaber

Like Rey, Kylo Ren will continue to use the same cross-hilt lightsaber he had in The Force Awakens. Here’s a shot of it in the trailer:

Snoke’s lightsaber

We don’t know if Supreme Leader Snoke actually uses a lightsaber, but Star Wars YouTuber Mike Zeroh has a theory that the mysterious figure will have a black ‘darksaber‘ in The Last Jedi. Watch the clip below for his explanation – it’s pretty out there.

What ships will we see in The Last Jedi?

Kylo Ren’s TIE Silencer

This is the only official new ship we’ve seen from the film. Here’s StarWars.com’s official description:

“Reminiscent in design of the Empire’s TIE interceptor and Darth Vader’s TIE advanced, Kylo Ren’s TIE silencer is an angular fighter equipped with laser cannons and missile launchers. Ren is an expert pilot – thanks to skills passed down from his father – which he puts to use in exploiting his ship’s speed and ferocity. There is no other First Order craft like the TIE silencer, and it is an effective tool in Ren’s mission to destroy the Resistance.”

The Millennium Falcon

This is the only other named ship we know about at the moment – a classic. Now that Han Solo is out of the picture, it looks like Rey and Chewie will be using this ship for the Resistance.

Whatever ‘these things’ are

Are they mining something? Are they racing? Only time will tell.

Who’s writing the music for The Last Jedi?

John Williams is returning to score The Last Jedi. Normally, scores are written after the film’s editing has been completed, but Last Jedi director Rian Johnson asked John Williams to compose his score ahead of that, so he can use it to inspire the edit.

That’s all for now – but we’ll keep this page up to date with any new info.
