One of the biggest films on the horizon is Suicide Squad, the biggest antihero film ever made, and it’s shaping up to be the film of the summer. Here’s everything you need to know about it.
When is Suicide Squad released in the UK?
August 5, 2016
What is Suicide Squad about?
Suicide Squad is about a ragtag group of imprisoned DC Comics supervillains who are offered the chance to band together to face an unprecedented threat on behalf of the US Government. In exchange for defeating it, they’ll earn their freedom.
Who makes up the Suicide Squad?
It’s not entirely clear if the green-haired Joker will be part of the crew, but he’s in the film. At the moment, it looks like the squad will be formed by the psychotic, baseball bat-wielding cheerleader Harley Quinn, the assassin Deadshot, the possessed Enchantress, another assassin called Boomerang, a fire-producing gangster called El Diablo, the lizardy Killer Croc, and another assassin called Slipknot. Padding out the team is its puppet-master, Rick Flag, a very by-the-book guy who carries out the orders of government official Amanda Waller. He also has a sword-wielding assistant called Katana.
How long is Suicide Squad?
A cool 122 minutes.
What is Suicide Squad’s UK rating?
It’s a 15 film – just like Deadpool was. A good sign…
Let’s see the trailers then
The trailers so far have played on the film’s humour, and as the huge success of Deadpool earlier this year shows, there’s clearly an appetite for ruder, less morose superhero films. But it also looks unusually dark for a ‘superhero’ film, compared to romps like Captain America. This collection of mad and sadistic villains is press-ganged into military service by blackmail – and they’ll be blown up by mini-bombs inside them if they don’t do what they’re told.

Will there be much CGI?
Not excessive CGI, no. Director David Ayer has confirmed that he’s trying to do as many stunts and action set-pieces as possible using old-school techniques. CGI clogged up Batman vs Superman, so it should up the rep of Suicide Squad with critics.
Who’s in the Suicide Squad cast?
In the role of The Joker is 30 Seconds To Mars’ Jared Leto. His deranged sidekick Harley Quinn is Margot Robbie, star of The Wolf Of Wall Street. Will Smith joins the crew as sniper dude Deadshot, Cara Delevingne plays Enchantress and Jai Courtney – who you might recognise from Terminator: Genisys – is a guy called Captain Boomerang.
Then there’s Joel Kinnaman (House of Cards) as non-villain crew leader Rick Flag, newcomer Karen Fukuhara as his bodyguard Katana, Viola Davis as the puppet master Amanda Waller, and Lost’s Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as scaly monster Killer Croc. As El Diablo we have Jay Hernandez, and Slipknot is played by Adam Beach. Here they all are:
Is Ben Affleck’s Batman in it?
Yes. Batman last appeared in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, a film fans enjoyed enough to make it the sixth highest-grossing film of 2016 so far, but one that critics dismissed as empty and flat. Affleck should have a chance to do something more interesting with his role in this rather different film.
What is Jared Leto’s Joker like?
Leto went full method-actor for this part, sending his cast-mates a used condoms and sex toys, a dead pig, some bullets, and a live rat. He asked all the crew to call him ‘Mr J’ on set. Will Smith says he’d never properly met Jared Leto until after filming. Leto’s Joker has been talked up since last summer – everyone is waiting to see whether he matches up to the criminally insane hype.
Who does Viola Davis play?
Davis’ character, Amanda Waller, is a ruthless and powerful figure who will do anything to control her squad, including possibly killing them off. Davis has twice been nominated for an Oscar, has won an Emmy, two Tonys and four SAG awards. Her part is going to be just as interesting to watch as Leto’s, if not more so.
Is Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn the best character?
Possibly, yes. Robbie appears to add a lot of the comedy to the movie. As with her The Wolf of Wall Street character Naomi Lapaglia, she’s going to be bringing the same energy to her mad, baseball bat-wielding Harley Quinn. And if that name doesn’t sound familiar, read our guide to who Harley Quinn is.
How much action will there be?
Lots. Reshoots were announced after the Batman vs Superman release date, and it was reported that they were being done to add ‘more jokes’ to the script. The director has said this is wrong – the reshoots were to add more action to the film, and from the trailers what’s there so far looks innovative and interesting enough to drop your jaw a few times.
Who’s the main villain
We still don’t actually know, but the Comic Con trailer appears to show that it’s Delevingne who’s behind all the chaos in the film. She’s said the girls have the “best roles” in the film and her character, Enchantress, is possessed by a powerful witch, so she can’t control her powers. Sounds pretty villainous.
There are a few reasons she looks like she could be the movie’s main villain. First there’s a scene of her standing menacingly in the White House, like she’s just teleported in. Then there’s another where looks like she’s in and disguise getting suspiciously close to the non-villain team leader, Rick Flag.
And finally, in the Comic Con trailer, she’s at the base of a suspiciously evil looking column doing this, sans team:
Looks like legit villainy to us.
What was it like on the Suicide Squad set?
Well, apart from Jared Leto sending everyone sticky objects in the post, it seems like it was a lot of fun. They’ve all been tattooing each other with the letters ‘SKWAD’ since wrapping, although Will Smith is apparently not the best at inking people…

While I do love the Justice League cast, I love how the #Skwad feel more of a family than any other cast, which is important to me when it comes to a “team-up” film. And there’s absolutely no doubt the chemistry and camaraderie will show on-screen. #SuicideSquad Picture via @MTV

Does Will Smith say the title of the movie in the movie?
Yes, and this is a universally accepted mark of quality.
