Altered Carbon season 2: everything we know so far

Is the series based on the Richard K. Morgan novels coming back?

With Netflix’s landmark new sci-fi series Altered Carbon, the story of Takeshi Kovacs has just begun. The show is based on the first of Richard K. Morgan’s series of novels – so what do we know about season 2?

Is Altered Carbon season 2 happening?

Netflix hasn’t yet confirmed a second season. Most of its originals do get a shot at season 2, but in recent months more of its original shows have been cancelled, and last year’s Girlboss and Gypsy were axed after just one season.

The criticla reception for Altered Carbon has been decidedly mixed, but according to the number of positive fan reviews it looks as though it’s struck a chord with viewers – so it’s not unlikely that Netflix will renew it.

There are also reports from Production Week that shooting dates for the second season has already been arranged for October 2018 in Vancouver.

When will it be released?

If Production Week is right about shooting beginning in October 2018, then season 2 is likely to arrive sometime in 2019. Due to the huge production values of the show – star Joel Kinnaman said it’s “got a bigger budget than the first three seasons of Game of Thrones” – it’s likely that it’ll be some time before season 2 is completed.

Who’s in the cast?

Not Joel Kinnaman, who told NME: “I think there’s a big chance that Kovacs would be re-sleeved if there was a second season.” This is because the first season ends with Kovacs giving back his ‘sleeve’ – the Joel Kinnaman bod he’s been wearing while conducting the investigation.

Characters that could be returning are Kristin Lehman as Miriam Bancroft, James Purefoy as Laurens Bancroft, Martha Higareda as Kristin Ortega and Renée Elise Goldsberry as Quellcrist Falconer.

What will happen in the plot?

Joel Kinnaman told Rotten Tomatoes: “If you look at the books, each book takes place in a completely different universe, so if [Netflix gets] the rights to the other books and then [makes] them, to follow them, it would be basically a new cast for every season. It would be more of an anthology… If they follow the narrative of the books, then it would be a new cast for every one, maybe with a couple of holdovers.”

The other books in the series are called Broken Angels and Woken Furies. The first sequel to Altered CarbonBroken Angels, finds Kovacs 30 years on from Altered Carbon, serving in a mercenary group.

Is there a trailer?

Season two has yet to be announced, so no. But we’ll update this page as soon as any new information becomes available.
