“As you know, we’ve inherited quite a budget crunch from President Trump.” Those are just a few of Lisa Simpson’s first words as President of the United States of America in the notorious fortune-telling episode ‘Bart To The Future’, first aired in 2000. Simpsons writer Dan Greaney this year described the episode as “a warning to America” – one that’s been overlooked. Don’t worry, though, it’s all fine!
If you watch the episode now you might actually find it incredibly bleak because – as Greaney puts it – “Lisa comes into the Presidency when America is on the ropes and that is the condition left by the Trump Presidency. What we needed was for Lisa to have problems that were beyond her fixing, that everything went as bad as it possibly could, and that’s why we had Trump be President before her.”
But The Simpsons’ writers can’t always be right. And a lot of people are looking to the episode as a sign of hope, because even though America now has four years of a misogynistic racist who opposes marriage equality and has bragged about sexually harassing women, there’s a chance he’ll fuck everything up so much that 2020 will see a less objectionable human being taking office. That’s what people are saying to console themselves, anyway:
