Despite being the first Netflix Original show to really take off, House of Cards is bowing out with its final season in 2018. This season, perhaps more than any other, is shrouded by controversy regarding Kevin Spacey’s departure – but allows for a new story to close out the epic political saga, with Robin Wright now alone in the lead role. Here’s what you need to know about House of Cards season 6.
When is House of Cards season 6 out?
A trailer released in March revealed that the show will return in “Fall” – aka autumn, and much later than its usual air date in February.
Has House of Cards season 6 begun filming?
The production of the new series began last year, but the show’s filming schedule was disrupted last year. On October 31, 2017 allegations against Kevin Spacey – who played one of the lead characters, President Frank Underwood – surfaced with several accusing him of sexual misconduct.
Netflix announced a day later that production on the new episodes had been halted to allow for Netflix and Media Rights Capital (the show’s original producer) to “give us time to review the current situation and to address any concerns of our cast and crew”. On November 3, it was announced that Kevin Spacey would not be returning, nor involved with any future episodes of House of Cards.
The show began filming again in January 2018, with Robin Wright – who plays Claire Underwood – as the lead character alongside new cast members.

How many episodes will there be?
On December 3, Netflix announced that the show would consist of eight episodes, as opposed to the regular 13-episode run.
Is this the last season of House of Cards?
Yes, this will be the final run of the political thriller. This was announced soon after initial allegations were made against Kevin Spacey – though Netflix insist that the decision was made beforehand.
Will the entire cast be back for House of Cards season 6?
It is currently unconfirmed which members of the show will be returning. The core of the cast – which includes faithful Underwood aide Doug Stamper (Michael Kelly) – are likely to return, should the episodes continue on from season 5’s storylines. In an recent interview with NME Joel Kinnaman confirmed that he would not be appearing in season 6, saying: “I had a one-season arc that was spread over two seasons, so I was done in the middle of the fifth.”
Will there be any new characters for House of Cards season 6?
There will be at least two new characters in the final episodes. Diane Lane, who is most well known for her award-winning role in Unfaithful in 2002, will join alongside Greg Kinnear, who previously appeared in political drama The Kennedys in 2011, among other roles. No details about their characters have been announced just yet.
What’s going to happen in House of Cards season 6?
Well, there will be no Frank – that much is certain. Claire, who at the end of the last season was confirmed as interim President, will be the show’s lead character, offering a new perspective of an Underwood in the Oval Office.
