When will Cardi B’s album be released? Everything you need to know

The 'Bodak Yellow' star is poised to release her full-length debut

She’s the viral sensation who became a bonafide hip-hop phenomenon. New Yorker Belcalis Almanzar first found fame on Instagram and Vine by sharing unfiltered insights from her former life as a stripper. The 25-year-old turned her hand to music in 2015 thanks to the popular VH1 hip-hop reality show  Love & Hip Hop: New York, and is now a bona fide superstar.

Why is Cardi B famous as a rapper?

You will, by now, surely be familiar with ‘Bodak Yellow’, which has racked up more than 413 million views on YouTube since it was uploaded back in June last year. The track, an empowered hip-hop banger, was named ‘Song of the Year’ at the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards and was nominated for a Grammy, hitting number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

She told Billboard of the song: “I wanted to do a song that is, like, ‘You know what? I’m in a good place in my life right now and I want to stun’.” She also explained: “While I was recording it, every bitch that I don’t like came into my head.”

When will her album be released?

Back in September, Cardi B promised that her debut studio album would be released in October – alas, that didn’t turn out to be the case. She offered an update in November, tweeting that perfectionism keeps causing her to delay the release date. “I have a lot of pressure on me,” she wrote. “I have songs stashed up. I just don’t think they qualified for my album. Sometimes i think is ready sometimes i think it’s not so I’m going to take my time till it’s right.”

This came after she had appeared on American radio show The Breakfast Club and revealed the success of ‘Bodak Yellow’ was proving a lot for her to live up to. “Every single time I think I got all the 10 songs I’m like, I’m buggin,” she said. “These ain’t it. It’s just like, damn I’m competing with myself. I’m competing with the goddamn No. 2 record [on the Billboard Hot 100] and stuff.” Well, Cardi, if you will insist on being so bloody successful…

On March 11, though, accepting her best new artist gong at the iHeartRadio Music Awards in California, Cardi explained: “New album in April — stay tuned motherfuckers,” though gave no further details. Oh, Cardi, you tease!

There’s currently no working title in the public domain – but we’ll keep you posted! Cardi B’s previous two mixtapes, released in March 2016 and January 2017 respectively, were called Gangsta Bitch Music, Vol. 1 and Gangsta Bitch Music, Vol. 2, so expect something equally fierce.

Who will feature on Cardi B’s album?

Possibly Offset from massive Georgia hip-hop trio Migos, with whom she’s been in a relationship since early last year. The two became engaged in October, though the internet has been awash with speculation that the relationship may be on the rocks. Still, she recently told Beats 1 host Julie Adenuga: “I did a love song, and while I was doing the verse I just kept thinking about a couple of months back when me and him [Offset] on really good terms and I was getting really pissed off and really emotional and I was like who cares? I got a ring!” Drake also booked Cardi to perform at his festival OVO festival in Toronto last summer, so perhaps the 6 God has dropped into the studio with her.

What will it sound like?

Gangsta Bitch Music volumes one and two were filled with icy trap beats and hilarious, sassy-as-fuck oneliners and breathtakingly rude putdowns (“You run your mouth, I’m popping out, now it’s on sight / You gon be just like my pussy—hella tight”), so you can better you bottom dollar that the upcoming album will use these elements in similarly excellent fashion. But if there’s one thing Cardi B has proved, it’s that she’s absolutely full of surprises.
