Quick Questions

I was just wondering....

1. What ever happened to Steven Wells? Is there any chance of him writing for the nme again ?

2. Any chance of some features on all those bands that are name dropped ALL THE TIME but that people like me know nothing about eg gang of four, orange juice, PiL etc

3. With bands like the Kaiser Cheifs / bloc party / franz etc doing so well, what are nmes' sales figures like now

Thanks x x x

Hello Bobby....................

Steven Wells does some stuff for Playlouder now.

http://www.playlouder.com/feature/+swells/

Surely a quick search on the Internet could tell you all you want to know about those bands?

Even in these dark days re-employing Steven Wells would be a big backward step. The man did nothing but write about himself under the vague heading of a piece on an actual musical act; total ego journalism without the panache to make it interesting, as only a few notable names have ever done.

Wow, you must be a riot at parties.
The NME is a comic, with its glossy pages and pretty pictures everywhere. The interviews aren't groundbreaking and it focuses on style over talent. Take the Awards - now sponsered by a hair gel for a perfect example of the kind of audience it caters for. Let's face it, the NME is now Heat Magazine with a faint whiff of B.O. for the slightly 'trendy' and 'offbeat' yet spotty teenagers of our current spoilt and utterly materialistic social climate.

Who cares what the sales are. The NME is a joke.

Well said.

I could explain why i hate the magazine yet spend time posting on their message boards, but i wont.

bunny love: I dont go to parties. And if the nme is so obssesed with style over talent, why did it let the magic numbers have a front cover - and why would it spend so much time promoting inteligent bands with things to say (bloc party / the libertines). I agree that there is stuff written about gossip / hair cuts / trivial crap..... but then you need that - it would be a dry boring read otherwise - and its never been totally orientated that way... if you want proof that inteligent music journalism is still out there, go back and read the nme;s coverage of the grey album, or the bloc party album review, or their coverage of the libertines towards the end....

Pusherman: Regarding Steven wells I dont know... I just liked his provacative confrontational style. I wasnt that old when I read his stuff, so I cant claim to be able to evaluate him or anything. I just remember his articles being quite funny... there was one in which he argued in favour of the creation of tory concentration camps = D

(I'll have a google and see if i can find it, i think it orignally started of as a rant about football holiganism?)

Q magazine readers, huh? They're so easy to tell apart from the urban warrior revolutionaries who stay true to the radical copy of the NME week after week.

Exactly............

Toffeenose 09-19-2005 12:18 PM

aaah... steven wells.

a thousand words about himself, then (if he liked the band) start on about class warfare or accuse the band/genre/world of being racist.

Last I heard he was writing for the short-lived, naffly titled, music monthly, Bang.

Toffeenose 09-19-2005 01:13 PM

He wasn't as twatish in Bang, but still not the best.

It must be a really easy career as a critic if your only given things that you hate.

One thing that does make me smirk is when he said that TaTu were some sort of new-punk-rock/second coming/other bullshit.

I hope he loses his fingers.

i dont think that was that 'out there' a comment to make... ok they didnt have the music style of the pistols or anything, but in terms of the reaction they provoked from people.... ?

Experiments in Living 10-05-2005 12:58 PM

Just thought id say the new look nme has pretty much addressed everything - what with more sections that look back, and nme writers being given the chance to rant more (the brilliant new comment section) - thanks !
