Channel 4 criticised after branding vegans ‘asswipes’ in Instagram post

Channel 4 has been criticised after the broadcaster appeared to mock vegans in a recent Instagram post.

In the since deleted post, Channel 4 shared a photo which showed Countdown host Rachel Riley standing by a board which had the word ‘asswipe’ spelt out on it , along with the caption “When your friends say they’re doing Veganuary”.

Channel 4’s own caption added: “It’s tricky to all agree on a restaurant in January. #veganuary”.

The broadcaster has now faced backlash from the organisers of Veganuary, the initiative which encourages people to try a vegan lifestyle for one month only.

“Apparently, Channel 4 – the broadcaster that supposedly champions unheard voices, inspires change and stands up for diversity – thinks it’s cool to insult the 165k people who are doing Veganuary”, Veganuary wrote on Facebook.

“People take part in Veganuary for loads of reasons – to improve their health, to protect animals, or to help the environment. All pretty good things, in our book, and we’re surprised Channel 4 disagrees.

“Many people are vegan because of sincerely held beliefs about not causing cruelty – something that’s a protected characteristic under the 2010 Equality Act. We hope Channel 4 didn’t mean to discriminate – why not tell Channel 4 why you’re vegan and ask them to apologise?”

Responding to the post, one follower wrote: “Welcome to Veganism. Where you are constantly made fun of simply for living a cruelty free lifestyle. Because, you know… That’s definitely something to look down on.”

NME has contacted Channel 4, but is yet to receive a response.

Meanwhile, a chef resigned from her job earlier this month after claiming that she had ‘spiked” a Vegan customer.

Laura Goodman, who co-owns the Carlini restaurants in Shifnal and Albrighton in Shropshire, left a number of disparaging comments on the Facebook group The Boring Group on December 30 about serving a vegan in her restaurant.

“Pious, judgemental vegan (who I spent all day cooking for) has gone to bed, still believing she’s a vegan,” one comment read, while another saw Goodman write: “Spiked a vegan a few hours ago.”
