3D 'Titanic' to be released in cinemas next April

James Cameron's epic love story to return to the big screen

Titanic, James Cameron's 11-Oscar-winning, box office-smashing 1997 hit is set to return to cinema screens next year in 3D.

The release will tie in with the historic date of April 15, 2012: the centennial of the famous ocean liner's sinking. It will hit cinemas on April 6.

Cameron said: "There's a whole generation that’s never seen Titanic as it was meant to be seen, on the big screen. And this will be Titanic as you’ve never seen it before, digitally re-mastered at 4K and painstakingly converted to 3D. With the emotional power intact and the images more powerful than ever, this will be an epic experience for fans and newcomers alike."

For over a decade Titanic was the biggest movie of all time, the first to gross $1 billion, an achievement that was only eventually eclipsed by Cameron's own Avatar in 2009.

2012 is already destined to be a huge year for blockbusters, with The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers and the Spider-Man reboot all vying for box-office returns. But it would be a brave person who'd bet against Titanic eclipsing them all and reclaiming it's top spot as the most successful movie of all time.
