Adele feels 'like Meryl Streep' after Oscar nomination for Bond theme 'Skyfall'

This year's Oscars nominations have been announced in a live online broadcast, prompting plenty of discussion on Twitter.

Steven Spielberg's biopic Lincoln leads the way with a whopping 12 nominations, including one for star Daniel Day-Lewis, who is the strong favourite to win his third Best Actor prize.

Ang Lee's fantasy film Life Of Pi is right behind with 11 nominations. Musical movie Les Misérables and Quentin Tarantino's Western film Django Unchained also feature in multiple categories, including Best Picture.

Meanwhile, Adele will compete for the Best Original Song gong after receiving a nomination for her Bond theme 'Skyfall'. The singer celebrated the news with her first tweet since December 13, posting:

Skyfall misses out on a Best Picture nod, but several relatively unknown films are recognised in key categories, leading to some unexpected Twitter trends. Beasts Of The Southern Wild, an indie flick made for just $1.8m (£1.1m), is now trending after picking up four nominations including one for Best Picture. The film's star Quvenzhané Wallis is also trending despite having a seemingly difficult-to-spell name. At just nine years old, she is the youngest ever nominee for the Best Actress prize.

In an interesting quirk, she will compete against the oldest ever nominee for the prize. Veteran Frenchwoman Emmanuelle Riva, 85, receives a Best Actress nomination for her performance in little-known French film Amour, which has also become a Twitter trend.

Meanwhile, #Best Director is trending on Twitter too after the Academy unveiled a surprising shortlist for that award. Spielberg and Lee are both nominated, but Argo's Ben Affleck, Les Misérables director Tom Hooper and Zero Dark Thirty helmer Kathryn Bigelow all get snubbed.

As expected, Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro all receive acting nominations, but a trio of British Dames - Judi Dench, Helen Mirren and Maggie Smith - miss out after being considered contenders.
