Andrew Garfield nearly 'suffocated' while shooting 'The Amazing Spider-Man'

Andrew Garfield has revealed that he almost suffocated while shooting The Amazing Spider-Man.

While filming a scene set in the New York City sewers, the British actor misjudged the effect water would have on his spandex Spider-Man mask.

He told the New York Daily News: "I had to get wet, and I just kind of dove in a didn't realise the water on the mask made it impossible to breathe. So I was kind of, like, suffocating. I couldn't get any oxygen! I water-boarded myself."

Fortunately, Garfield was freed from his sodden Spider-Man suit by the film's fight co-ordinator, Andy Armstrong, and shooting soon resumed.

The Amazing Spider-Man, starring Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as his love interest Gwen Stacy, opens in cinemas on July 3. The film's UK premiere took place at Leicester Square in London yesterday (June 26).
