'Angry Birds' to be made into a movie

Angry Birds is to be made into a movie, the game's makers Rovio Entertainment have announced.

The 3D computer-animated feature film will fly into cinemas in summer 2016. Rovio will finance the movie itself, outside of the Hollywood studio system, in order to retain creative control.

In a press released, Rovio confirmed two key members of the creative team. The movie will be produced by John Cohen, whose previous credits include Despicable Me, and executive produced by David Maisel, a former Chairman of Marvel Studios.

Cohen said in a press release: "From both an entertainment and strategic perspective, Rovio is at the forefront of game innovation and is trailblazing terrific new ways for Angry Birds fans to interact with these characters. I've personally spent countless hours playing the Angry Birds games over the last few years, which I can now happily justify as research for the movie."

Since Rovio launched Angry Birds in 2009, the game has been downloaded over a billion times. Spin-off versions have included two with a movie theme: Angry Birds Rio and the recently-released Angry Birds Star Wars.
