Arnold Schwarzenegger's wife Maria Shriver has filed for a divorce from the former Governor of California.

The couple separated in May following revelations that The Terminator star had fathered a child with one of his household staff.

r /> According to BBC News, the divorce papers cited irreconcilable differences as the reason to end their 25-year marriage. They do not indicate that the couple had a pre-nuptial agreement regarding the division of their wealth.

The couple have four children together and former journalist Shriver is seeking joint custody of their two youngest sons, who are aged 17 and 13.

Schwarzenegger went public with the news of his infidelity on May 16, making a brief statement to the Los Angeles Times.

"There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry," he said.

The child was born over a decade ago, before his first bid for office.

It is believed that the mother who has not been named, worked for the family for over 20 years, before retiring in January.
