'Avengers Assemble' stars Scarlett Johansson and Cobie Smulders join 'Captain America 2'
The actresses will be reprising their popular roles as Black Widow and Maria Hill
Scarlett Johansson will make her third appearance as Black Widow in the new Captain America movie.
Johansson previously played the catsuit-clad spy in 2010's Iron Man 2 and this year's Avengers Assemble. Her role in the Captain America sequel has been revealed by Variety, who also confirmed a part for another Avengers Assemble actress, Cobie Smulders, who plays SHIELD agent Maria Hill.
Titled Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the sequel is scheduled to begin filming this March for an April 2014 release. Chris Evans, Samuel L Jackson and Sebastian Stan will all be reprising their roles from the first Captain America film.
Meanwhile, The Hurt Locker star Anthony Mackie has joined the cast as a superhero called The Falcon who has the ability to fly and communicate with birds telepathically. The sequel's main villain will be a character called Crossbones played by Prison Break actor Frank Grillo.
However, the sequel's main cast has yet to be finalised. Earlier this month (October 2012), it was reported that Downton Abbey star Jessica Brown Findlay is front runner to play Captain America's love interest. However, she reportedly faces competition from four other actresses including Mad Men's Alison Brie and Game Of Thrones' Emilia Clarke.
Chris Evans recently revealed that Captain America: The Winter Soldier will feature deleted scenes from The Avengers. He explained: "A lot of that stuff [that was cut] is for Captain America 2. That is his story. It is him trying to on a personal level adjust to the fact that everyone he knows is gone... There are a lot of things that he kind of has to come to terms with."
