'Batman: The Dark Knight Rises' begins filming... in Croydon

Principal photography has begun on the new Batman film The Dark Knight Rises in areas of London, including at the Farmiloe Building on St John Street and areas of Croydon.

Gotham Police Department vehicles were photographed outside the Farmiloe on Wednesday (May 18). Today cameras move to Croydon for what is reported by Metro to be an "explosion" scene.

The previous Batman films were mostly shot in Chicago, but Hitflix reports that director Christopher Nolan intends to mix up the locations for the new movie to ensure that Gotham isn't too recognisable as the Windy City.

Other filming locations are rumoured to take in areas of Scotland in addition to parts of India, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles and New York.

For The Dark Knight Rises Christian Bale will reprise his role as Bruce Wayne. He will be re-joined by Michael Caine playing butler Alfred, Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox.

Anne Hathaway and Tom Hardy join the cast as Selina Kyle and Bane.

The Dark Knight Rises is due to be released on July 20 next year.
