Baz Luhrmann's 'The Great Gatsby' gets Christmas Day 2012 release date
Leonardo DiCaprio will now be in two films hitting theatres on December 25 next year
Baz Luhrmann's big-screen adaptation of The Great Gatsby will open in theatres on Christmas Day 2012, it has been revealed.
Warner Bros. has announced that the Australian director's film version of F Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel, which will reportedly be shot in 3D, will hit cinemas on December 25 next year.
Leonardo DiCaprio, who has signed on to play the movie's lead character, will now star in two films that will open on Christmas Day next year. He is also set to feature in Quentin Tarantino's forthcoming Western flick Django, which is scheduled to be released on the same day.
Luhrmann is currently shooting The Great Gatsby in his native Australia, although Fitzgerald's story is set on Long Island's North Shore and in New York during the summer of 1922.
Tobey Maguire will play the character Nick Carraway, while Carey Mulligan plays Daisy Buchanan. Other members of the film's cast include Wedding Crashers star Isla Fisher and Australian actor Joel Edgerton.
The Great Gatsby has been adapted for film many times before, with the most famous version being Jack Clayton's 1974 offering. Robert Redford took on the lead role of Jay Gatsby, with a script written by Francis Ford Coppola.
