BBC announces 3D cinema screenings for 'Doctor Who' 50th anniversary episode

Doctor Who's 50th anniversary episode will be screened in 3D in over 200 UK cinemas at the same time it is broadcast on BBC One on November 23.

The anniversary special will also be "simulcast" in cinemas in the US, Canada, Germany and Russia, BBC Worldwide announced yesterday (October 22). In addition, cinema screenings will be held very shortly after the simulcast in Australia and New Zealand.

Some 216 UK cinemas belonging to the VUE, Cineworld, Odeon, BFI and Picturehouse chains have already signed up to screen the special and tickets will go on this sale this Friday (September 25) at 9am. Full details can be found at the Doctor Who website.

The anniversary episode is called The Day Of The Doctor and has a special extended running time of 75 minutes. The show's current stars Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman will be joined for the episode by popular former Timelord David Tennant and companion Billie Piper, as well as by John Hurt.

The BBC has also announced a series of special programmes to celebrate the show's 50th birthday including a Doctor Who-themed episode of The Culture Show, a BBC Two lecture by Dr Brian Cox on the science behind the series and An Adventure In Space And Time, a one-off BBC Two drama penned by Mark Gatiss about the creation of the series in the early '60s. Meanwhile, BBC Four will broadcast a restored version of An Unearthly Child, Doctor Who's first ever adventure from 1963.

In addition, BBC Three has sifted through the archives for Doctor Who: The Ultimate Guide and is planning a Doctor Who: Monsters And Villains Weekend featuring a countdown to the show's best-loved baddie. Further special programmes will air on CBBC and BBC radio. Watch the BBC's trailer for its Doctor Who 50th anniversary programming below.
