Benedict Cumberbatch has reportedly dropped out of Crimson Peak, the forthcoming haunted house thriller from director Guillermo del Toro.
The Sherlock actor had been attached to star in the film alongside Jessica Chastain, Charlie Hunnam and Mia Wasikowska, but according to Variety he has exited the project for "unknown reasons". Del Toro, who is planning to start shooting Crimson Peak next February (2014), is now said to be seeking a replacement.
Crimson Peak is del Toro's follow-up to monster movie Pacific Rim, which opened in cinemas last month (July) and performed disappointingly in the US but rather better elsewhere. It's now grossed over $380 million (£240 million) worldwide.
Meanwhile, the hugely in demand Cumberbatch has three movies due in UK cinemas before the end of the year (2013): The Hobbit: Desolation Of Smaug, Oscar-tipped ensemble drama August: Osage County with Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, and The Fifth Estate, in which he stars as WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
He'll also be seen with Martin Freeman in season three of Sherlock, which is expected to air on BBC1 during the autumn.
