Bette Midler apologises following 'transphobic' Caitlyn Jenner tweets
70-year-old actress was responding to news of Jenner's reality TV show cancellation
The 70-year-old actress, singer and film producer tweeted about Jenner after news that her E! reality series I Am Cait, which followed her transition from Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner to a transgender woman, was not to be renewed for a third season.
"Now that @IAmCait has been cancelled, will she go back to being Bruce?" Midler wrote, before adding another controversial tweet mentioning Jenner’s ex-wife Kris. "Will Kris take him back? Do I smell a re-wedding?!" she said.
Midler received criticism for her comments, with many Twitter users considering them insensitive and transphobic. Midler later deleted the offending tweets and swiftly issued an apology, tagging The Human Rights Campaign, the USA’s largest LGBT civil rights organisation.
In the apology, Midler said that she "misread the temper of the times". See below.
DEAR FRIENDS @HRC, WHOM I HAVE ALWAYS SUPPORTED. SORRY LAST TWEET OFFENDED. AN IDLE MUSING. I SEEM TO HAVE MISREAD THE TEMPER OF THE TIMES.— Bette Midler (@BetteMidler) August 21, 2016
American writer Parker Molloy was among those to criticise Midler, tweeting: “No, @BetteMidler, no. Oh, dear. This is not a good tweet. I repeat: not a good tweet” before adding: “@BetteMidler There are ways to joke about Jenner that aren't transphobic. Calling her "him" isn't one.”
“This shows a fundamental misunderstanding of what it means to be transgender. Really disappointing," Molloy's tweets added. "The issue wasn't making a joke about Caitlyn Jenner, but in referring to her as "him." That's transphobic, about more than her.”
The star of Beaches and The Stepford Wives has voiced her opinion on Caitlyn Jenner before, tweeting criticism about the reality star in November last year after she stated that she was a Republican. "Regardless of gender identity, I guess she identifies most as ‘uninformed’," Midler tweeted at the time.
