Bill Murray: ‘I am the problem with ‘Ghostbusters 3’

Actor says he 'hasn't read' new script

Bill Murray has admitted he is the reason why the much-mooted Ghostbusters 3 film hasn’t yet been made.

Ivan Reitman, who directed the original 1984 film and its 1989 sequel – is ready to direct the third instalment. Dan Ackroyd and Harold Ramis are set to return to the supernatural comedy series, but Murray is reluctant to reprise one of his most famous roles, Dr Peter Venkman.

He told US radio DJ Howard Stern that he hasn’t yet read the new script, penned by the writers of the US version of The Office, Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg.

Murray told Stern: “Before I was an asset, [but] now I’m a problem. There’s a script somewhere, but I haven’t read it yet. I only made one sequel and it was Ghostbusters 2 and it didn’t end up the way it was presented.”

He added: “Ivan wants to make it and I owe him. He’s puzzled that I haven’t gotten to this one. I’ll get to it, I feel bad. I got a message and I think people – I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings – it’s not the foremost thing in my mind, so I don’t think about it.”

Should it get made, it is believed that the third film will see the original Ghostbusters passing the baton to younger members. Names rumoured for the new team include Jack Black, Seth Rogen, Aston Kutcher and Michael Cera.
