Billy Crystal paid tribute to Robin Williams at last night's Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.

Having worked with Williams hosting several comic relief specials, the comedy actor was the obvious choice to lead the tribute to a man he remembered as “the brightest star in the comedy galaxy”.

“He made us laugh. Hard. Every time you saw him on television and movies, in nightclubs, arenas, hospitals, homeless shelters, for the troops overseas, and even in a dying girl’s living room for her last wish,” Crystal revealed in his emotional tribute to Williams which came at the end of the In Memoriam section of the ceremony.

Crystal’s eulogy was followed by a montage featuring some of Williams' best loved moments from his stand-up comedy routines and talk show appearances.

As reported the legendary actor and comedian was found dead at his California home two weeks ago. Police later confirmed the cause of death as suicide. It has since been revealed by his wife Susan Schneider that the actor was in the early stages of Parkinson's Disease for which he was receiving treatment.

As expected the TV Academy were careful with the way they handled the tribute following a 23-second photo tribute to Williams at the MTV Video Music Awards which was not well received.

Breaking Bad was the big winner at the Emmys while BBC 1 drama Sherlock pulled off a surprise hat-trick which included awards for Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.
