'Bourne 5' in the works with Jeremy Renner returning as lead

A fifth Bourne film is in the works, Variety reports, with Jeremy Renner set to return as lead.

Universal has reportedly hired screenwriter Anthony Peckham (Invictus), Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes) to pen a script focusing on Renner's character Aaron Cross, who was introduced in last year's The Bourne Legacy after Matt Damon chose not to return as Jason Bourne.

The Bourne Legacy took an impressive $275 million (£180 million) at cinemas worldwide last summer, but failed to match the success of the previous instalment, 2007's The Bourne Ultimatum, which raked in over $440 million (£290 million).

Meanwhile, longtime Bourne producer Frank Marshall will also be back for the forthcoming movie, Variety reports.

Speaking earlier this year (2013), Damon admitted that he would consider returning to the franchise depending on the script and provided that Paul Greengrass, who helmed the second and third Bourne movies, was back in the director's chair.
