'Breaking Bad' actor joins 'Better Call Saul' spin-off

Breaking Bad actor Jonathan Banks has joined the cast of upcoming spin-off Better Call Saul, it has been revealed.

Deadline says that Banks, who played private investigator Mike in the show, will serve as a regular cast member. Better Call Saul will centre on Saul Goodman, the dodgy lawyer played by Bob Odenkirk who is known for his catchphrase "Better call Saul!, and is set to hit TV screens later this year.

A statement from AMC and production company Sony Pictures Television said of the prequel: "As conceived, the new series is based on the show's popular Saul Goodman character with the working title Better Call Saul. Plans call for Saul to be a one-hour prequel that will focus on the evolution of the popular Saul Goodman character before he ever became Walter White's lawyer."

Previously, Breaking Bad stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul had shown an interest in appearing in Better Call Saul. Speaking of his plans and casting options for the show, creator Vince Gilligan said: "The sky's the limit with a prequel. Everybody who's now deceased in the Breaking Bad world is obviously still alive. You never know who might turn up and when and where."

The final episode of Breaking Bad was broadcast in September last year. The show ran for five seasons and won a slew of awards, including Cranston taking home the Emmy Award for Best Actor on three consecutive occasions for his performance as Walter White.
