Bridesmaids star Melissa McCarthy is being lined up for a small role in The Hangover Part III.

According to Variety, the actress has yet to join the cast officially, but her involvement is "likely" provided she can meet the filming schedule. McCarthy currently stars in US sitcom Mike & Molly and has several movie projects in the pipeline.

Filming on the The Hangover Part III began earlier this month (September). Firm plot details are being kept under wrapped, but the fim's set-up is described as follows: "This time, there's no wedding. No bachelor party. What could go wrong, right? But when the Wolfpack hits the road, all bets are off."

Director Todd Phillips has previously confirmed that this will be the final film in the record-breaking comedy series, promising a "fitting conclusion to our three-part opera of mayhem, despair and bad decisions".

Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha and Zach Galifianakis will all reprise their roles from the first two films, while boxer Mike Tyson is confirmed for another cameo. Ken Jeong, making his third appearance as Mr Chow, is said to have a "significantly expanded" part.

After sitting out The Hangover Part II, Heather Graham is set to return as Vegas stripper Jade, while Roseanne star John Goodman has a small role as an "antagonist". The film's script has been written by Craig Mazin, who also had a hand in the second film.

Released in 2009, The Hangover became the highest-grossing R-rated comedy ever and won a Golden Globe award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. The 2011 sequel, The Hangover Part II, was even more successful at the box office, taking over $580 million (£375 million) worldwide.

Since her Oscar-nominated turn in 2011's Bridesmaids, McCarthy has been increasingly in demand for film roles. Later this year (2012), she will be seen in This Is 40, director Judd Apatow's follow-up to Knocked Up. Meanwhile, she recently finished filming The Heat, an upcoming comedy in which she and Sandra Bullock star as FBI agents.
