The third film in the Captain America 3 will be released in May 2016, it has been revealed.

The second picture in the series, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, will not open until next month (April 4, 2014) but Marvel have confirmed that they already have a release slot lined up for a third instalment.

The film's release date of May 6 means it will go head-to-head at the box office with another comic book summer blockbuster: the eagerly-anticipated sequel to Man Of Steel, which will see Zack Snyder combine the worlds of Batman and Superman.

It was revealed last week (March 13) that directors Joe and Anthony Russo will be returning to helm Captain America 3. Joe Russo said: "We're just in the formative stages of it right now. We just started breaking the story and we’re just getting an idea of what we wanna do with it."

Captain America: The Winter Soldier will see Chis Evans reprise his role as the titular hero. He will be joined by Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow and Samuel L Jackson's Nick Fury for the sequel, while Anthony Mackie plays a superhero called the Falcon who has the ability to fly and Robert Redford appears as a a senior official within government agency SHIELD.
