Christian Bale in talks to star in new disaster movie 'Everest'

Christian Bale could be about to star in a new disaster movie called Everest.

According to Deadline, the actor is in "early talks" to lead the fact-based drama. Everest will tell the story of the tragic 1996 expedition to scale the world's highest mountain, in which eight climbers died after a sudden storm struck.

The script will be based on "various books and interviews with survivors", reports Deadline, with the latest draft penned by rookie screenwriter Justin Isbell.

Everest will be helmed by Icelandic director Baltasar Kormakur, whose previous credits include The Deep, another disaster movie rooted in a real-life tragedy. Released last year (2012), it tells the story of the only man to survive after a fishing vessel capsized in icy waters in 1984. Kormakur also directed last year's Contraband starring Mark Wahlberg.

Meanwhile, Bale's The Dark Knight Rises co-star Tom Hardy is attached to star in a separate film about Everest. He is being lined up to play tragic climber George Mallory, who disappeared during a 1924 expedition to reach the summit.
