Coldplay's set at Paralympic Games Closing Ceremony attracts over 7 million viewers

The Paralympic Games Closing Ceremony attracted a peak audience of 7.7 million viewers last night (September 9).

The average audience for the three-hour ceremony, shown live on Channel 4, settled at 5.9 million. These figures are slightly down on the figures for the Opening Ceremony on August 29, which attracted a peak audience of 10.9 million and an average of 7.6 million. However, they still helped to make Channel 4 the day's most-watched channel - ahead of BBC One and ITV1.

The Closing Ceremony at the Olympic Stadium in East London was graced by a full-length set from Coldplay. Chris Martin's band played 16 songs including 'Yellow', 'Viva La Vida', 'God Put A Smile Upon Your Face' and 'Clocks'.

Rihanna joined the band to perform their recent collaboration 'Princess Of China' and her own single 'We Found Love', while Coldplay flanked the singer and Jay-Z on the pair's 2009 hit 'Run This Town'. Jay-Z then performed a reworked version of 'Paradise' with the band, before Coldplay wrapped up their well-received set with 'The Scientist' and 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall'.

The Olympic Games Opening Ceremony was watched by a peak of 26.9 million viewers on July 27, while the Closing Ceremony on August 12 attracted an only slightly smaller audience of 26.3 million. Both events were shown on BBC One.
