Dan Stevens rumoured for 'Escape from New York' reboot
'Downton Abbey' star vying with Charlie Hunnam for lead role in sci-fi adventure
Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens has been eyed for a lead role in a reboot of John Carpenter’s 1981 sci-fi classic Escape from New York.
Sons of Anarchy’s Charlie Hunnam and The Walking Dead’s Jon Bernthal are also being considered to play rebel Snake Plissken.
Website Starlog reports that Hunnam is the “top contender” for the role made famous by Kurt Russell (pictured).
Starlog also reveals the new film, produced by Silver Pictures, will be a team-based adventure: “Plissken’s team consists of Mina, a warzone journalist framed for murder and living in the shadows of New York as a scavenger, Cabbie, a schizophrenic travel guide who serves as comic relief; Gareth, the last surviving member of the President’s security detail who harbours a dangerous secret; and The Brain, Plissken’s former partner-in-crime who left him to die after a botched robbery.”
In Carpenter’s original film, New York’s Manhattan Island has become a maximum-security prison in a futuristic vision of 1997. Convicted armed robber and former special forces soldier Plissken is offered a deal to avoid prison by rescuing the President whose plane has crash-landed on the island.
Dan Stevens hits the big screen this week in director Adam Wingard’s black comedy shocker The Guest, out on Friday.
Charlie Hunnam returns for the final season of Sons of Anarchy, which will be shown this autumn on FX.
Jon Bernthal will be seen in The Walking Dead Season 5, set to air on FX in October.
