'Dark Knight Rises' Christian Bale talks Bruce Wayne plot
The actor opens up about his Batman story arc
Christian Bale has hinted at his character Bruce Wayne's story in The Dark Knight Rises.
The actor will play the billionaire superhero vigilante for the third and final time in Christopher Nolan's forthcoming Batman threequel. And now he has revealed that the murder of his parents when he was a child still motivates him.
Bale told HitFix: "He doesn't want to forget [his parents deaths]. He wants to maintain that anger he felt at that injustice. But equally he wants to present this very vacuous, soulless persona to Gotham, so that hopefully no-one will suspect him but will just think he's a spoiled bastard.
"Consequently, in his most intimate moments he has Alfred [his butler], he has Rachel [his late love interest] and there is not a whole lot there."
Bale added that Wayne will have to "relearn" how to live, having missed out on so much life experience. He said: "At some point, he's got to start living. He is seriously behind in terms of life and enjoyment of life. That's all been sacrificed and at some point, hopefully it’s Alfred’s wish that he will start to live again.
"Of course this tragedy has defined him, but to a degree he's sacrificed everything that most people would consider worth living and he’s going to have to relearn that, embarrassingly late in life."
The Dark Knight Rises opens on July 20. Watch a trailer below:
