Deadpool has secured its place as the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.

The film took the worldwide title after passing the $745m (£522m) mark in box office receipts this weekend, reports The Guardian. The previous highest grossing Rated-R film was The Matrix Reloaded, which has held the title since 2003.

Ryan Reynolds plays the Marvel superhero in a film filled with bad language, graphic violence and nudity required to take it past the adult only certification. It is thought that the success of the film will herald a new era in comic book heroes aimed specifically at those over 18.

Deadpool sees Reynolds flanked by a supporting cast that includes Haywire's Gina Carano, former Homeland actress Morena Baccarin, Game Of Thrones veteran Ed Skrein and Silicon Valley star TJ Miller.

The film's official plot synopsis teases: "Based upon Marvel Comics' most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humour, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life."

According to a recent report, Deadpool 2 is already in the works at Fox.
