'Despicable Me 2' and 'Monsters University' enter Best Animated Feature Oscar race
Nominations for next year's Oscars will be announced on January 16
Despicable Me 2 and Monsters University have entered the race for the Best Animated Feature prize at next year's Oscars.
They appear on a list of 19 animated films submitted for consideration in the category, which is now in its 13th year. Other well-known movies on the list include The Croods, Epic, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2, Planes and The Smurfs 2.
The final list of nominees in the category will be announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with the rest of the Oscar nominations on January 16. In previous years, between three and five animated features have gone on to receive nominations.
Last year's Best Animated Feature award was won by Brave and past winners include Shrek, Finding Nemo, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit, Up, WALL-E and Toy Story 3. The Best Animated Feature prize was introduced in 2001 and since then only two animated films have been awarded nominations in both this category and the main Best Picture category: Up and Toy Story 3.
Despicable Me 2 is the highest-grossing animated film of 2013 and fifth highest ever with worldwide box office takings exceeding $910 million (£565 million). Monsters University is the second highest of 2013 and 11th highest ever with a global box office haul of $740 million (£460 million).
