'Despicable Me 2' becomes UK's biggest film of 2013

But it's still third on the worldwide list behind 'Iron Man 3' and 'Fast & Furious 6'

'Despicable Me 2' becomes UK's biggest film of 2013

Despicable Me 2 is now the highest-grossing film of 2013 in the UK.

Since opening in cinemas on June 28, the computer-animated sequel featuring the voices of Steve Carell and John Goodman has raked in £42.7 million at the UK box office. That puts it ahead of 2013's previous top-grosser, Les Misérables, which has taken £40.3 million.

Despicable Me 2, Deadline notes, is now the fourth most successful animated movie of all-time in the UK behind Toy Story 3 (£74.0 million), Shrek 2 (£48.2 million) and Toy Story 2 (£44.3 million).

Although Despicable Me 2 is the UK's biggest film of 2013, its global haul of $781 million (£498 million) puts it slightly behind Fast & Furious 6, second with $785 million (£501 million), and a way off Iron Man 3, Number One with $1.21 billion (£770 million).

Meanwhile, the film's scene-stealing squeaky yellow creatures The Minions are set to star in their own spin-off movie, due in December 2014.
