'Dexter' confirmed to end after eighth season – watch sneak peek trailer

Dexter will end after its forthcoming eighth season, it has been confirmed.

Last night (April 18), Showtime, the network responsible for the show, posted the announcement on its official Facebook alongside the first sneak peek trailer for the final series – you can watch it by scrolling down the page and clicking on 'play'.

The official confirmation that Dexter would end after its upcoming run comes after CBS – Showtime's parent company – chief Leslie Moonves told corporate investors in March that the hit crime drama would end in 2013.

Meanwhile, executive producer Scott Buck told The Hollywood Reporter in December: "We are absolutely writing it with an end in sight, but if we get told otherwise somewhere along the way, we'll take it in a different direction. But we are definitely working toward the finale of the series."

Speaking on Thursday after the announcement, Showtime's CEO Matt Blank said: "Dexter paved the way for the next generation of award-winning hit Showtime series, and its cultural impact will be felt for years to come."

Dexter is an American TV drama which debuted on Showtime on October 2006. The series centres on Dexter Morgan, played by Michael C Hall, a forensic scientist who leads a secret life as a serial killer. The show also stars Jennifer Carpenter as Dexter's foster sister. The new season premieres in the US on Showtime on June 20.
