'Doctor Who' actor Matt Smith to star in 'American Psycho' musical
Smith will play psychopath Patrick Bateman in a London stage production debuting this December
Departing Doctor Who star Matt Smith is to play Patrick Bateman in the forthcoming American Psycho musical.
Based on the notorious novel by Bret Easton Ellis, the musical thriller will have its world premiere at London's Almeida Theatre on December 3 and run for seven weeks until January 25, 2014.
Published in 1991, American Psycho follows the exploits of the psychopathic Patrick Bateman, a Wall Street trader by day and serial killer by night. The novel is renowned for its graphic violence and explicit sexual content and in some countries it was originally sold shrink-wrapped to over-18s only.
The stage adaptation has a script by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who has also penned the upcoming Carrie remake as well as writing for Glee and Big Love. Original songs have been written by Duncan Sheik, who previously wrote the music and lyrics for Spring Awakening, a rock musical which won eight Tony awards in 2007. In the novel, Patrick Bateman states that his favourite rock and pop artists are Genesis, Whitney Houston and Huey Lewis and the News.
British theatre veteran Rupert Goold is directing and the musical's supporting cast includes Jonathan Bailey (Broadchurch, Some Girls) and former X Factor finalist Lucie Jones. Rehearsals began yesterday (October 7).
Meanwhile, Smith will be seen in Doctor Who's 50th anniversary episode on November 23 - joined by his predecessor David Tennant - before making his final appearance as the Timelord in the show's Christmas special.
