Watch: 'Downton Abbey''s Dan Stevens in violent trailer for thriller 'The Guest'

Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens couldn't be further from costume drama in the latest trailer for Adam Wingard's suspense thriller The Guest.

Stevens plays an ex-soldier who pays a visit to the Peterson family claiming that he was a close friend of their son who died in action. After being welcomed into their home and befriending his dead friend's siblings, a series of strange 'accidental' deaths appear to be linked to his presence.

Stevens appeared in three seasons of the ITV series Downton Abbey, leaving in 2012 when his character Matthew Crawley met an untimely death. The actor will also be seen as Sir Lancelot alongside Ben Stiller in family comedy Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb and is currently filming the thriller Criminal Activities with John Trovolta.

Wingard made the cult home invasion horror You're Next and has also contributed to the horror story compendiums VHS and The ABCs Of Death.

Also starring Maika Monroe, Leland Orser, Sheila Kelley (Lost), Brendan Meyer and Lance Reddick (The Wire), The Guest will be in cinemas from September 5.
