Ellen DeGeneres to host 2014 Oscars ceremony
Chat show host will compere awards bash next year...
Ellen DeGeneres will host the 2014 Oscars ceremony, it has been revealed.
Yesterday (August 2), the US chat show host announced via Twitter that she would oversee the 86th annual Academy Awards. "It's official: I'm hosting the #Oscars!" she wrote. "I'd like to thank @TheAcademy, my wife Portia and, oh dear, there goes the orchestra."
DeGeneres previously hosted the award ceremony's telecast in 2007. Speaking about her role as next year's host, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said: "We are thrilled to have Ellen DeGeneres host the Oscars. As a longtime friend, we had always hoped to find a project for us to do together and nothing could be more exciting than teaming up to do the Oscars.
"There are few stars today who have Ellen's gift for comedy, with her great warmth and humanity. She is beloved everywhere and we expect that the audience at the Dolby Theatre, and in homes around the globe, will be as excited by this news as we are."
It had previously been speculated that actress Tina Fey would host next year's ceremony after she teamed up with fellow comedian Amy Poehler to host the Golden Globes earlier this year. However, when asked if she would contemplate taking on the role, she replied: "I just feel like that gig is so hard. Especially for, like, a woman - the amount of months that would be spent trying on dresses alone... no way."
This year's ceremony, which took place in February, was hosted by Ted director Seth MacFarlane, who earned mixed reviews for his performance. He made a number of questionable jokes during the course of the evening, including one about Rihanna's relationship with Chris Brown, and performed a song called 'We Saw Your Boobs' about various actresses in the audience.
