Female 'Expendables' movie casts 'Battlestar Galactica' actress Katee Sackhoff

Battlestar Galactica's Katee Sackhoff has joined a new movie conceived as a female version of The Expendables.

The project was announced in August (2012) and is being steered by producer Adi Shankar, the man behind Dredd 3D and Machine Gun Preacher. Shankar has already hired up-and-coming screenwriter Dutch Southern to pen a script.

Last month (September 2012), Haywire star Gina Carano became the first action heroine to sign up for the film. Variety has now revealed that Sackhoff will appear alongside her.

Explaining the decision to cast Sackhoff, Shankar said: "If you spend five minutes with Katee it becomes blatantly obvious that she would own most male action stars."

Sackhoff, 30, played Lt Kara Thrace on Battlestar Galactica from 2004 to 2009. She has since appeared in 24 and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and will flank Vin Diesel in next year's sequel to The Chronicles Of Riddick.

Meanwhile, Shankar is said to be in discussions with "several [other] prominent actresses affiliated with the action genre". Names mooted include Alien's Sigourney Weaver, Terminator 2's Linda Hamilton, Milla Jovovich from the Resident Evil series and Carano's Fast And Furious co-star Michelle Rodriguez.
