The first Fifty Shades Of Grey movie could come out as soon as next summer, says the chairman of Universal Pictures.
The three Fifty Shades Of Grey novels, which trace the sexual relationship between college graduate Anastasia Steele and businessman Christian Grey, have now sold over 65 million copies worldwide. EL James (pictured), the British author of the books, sold the screen rights to Universal Pictures and Focus Features back in March 2012.
The following October, screenwriter Kelly Marcel was hired to pen the script, but the film still has no director or cast members.
When asked about its status, Universal Pictures chairman Adam Fogelson told The Hollywood Reporter: "I don't believe that [author EL James] had any interest in going to a studio where rushing it into production was the vision. I don't believe that the second or third film would have benefited from that strategy. And I think that there are totally legitimate questions about what this book is as a movie."
Confirming that the project is moving forward, he continued: "I will tell you that it is an absolute priority for us. It's conceivable that we could be ready to release it as early as next summer."
Casting for the film is a particularly hot topic. Actresses linked to the Anastasia Steele role include Mila Kunis and Harry Potter's Emma Watson, while Channing Tatum, Henry Cavill and Ryan Gosling have all been mooted as potential Christian Greys.
