First pictures from 'The Muppets' sequel starring Ricky Gervais revealed

The first pictures from the new Muppets movie starring Ricky Gervais have been revealed.

Gervais appears in one of the promo images alongside Kermit and Miss Piggy, while the other shows the furry crew frolicking on a London Underground platform.

The film, a sequel to 2011's The Muppets, has just started shooting and now has an official title: The Muppets... Again. According to the plot synopsis, it takes the furry performers on a European tour, where they sell out shows in glamorous destinations including Berlin, Madrid and London.

However, they get little chance to bask in their glory. The synopsis explains: "Mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine - the World's Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit - and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais. The film stars Tina Fey as Nadya, a feisty prison guard, and Ty Burrell as Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon."

The Muppets... Again is being directed by James Bobin, who also helmed the 2011 movie. He said of the sequel: "It's a tip of the hat to the old-school crime capers of the '60s, but featuring a frog, a pig, a bear and a dog - no panthers, even pink ones - along with the usual Muppet-y mix of mayhem, music and laughs."

Released by Disney, 2011's The Muppets was the first big screen outing for Kermit and the gang in 12 years. The film was a hit at the box office, grossing over $158 million (£98 million) worldwide. Bret McKenzie won an Oscar for his original song 'Man Or Muppet' and is now writing new songs for the sequel, which is due out on March 21, 2014.
