The film, which is set to open this month (March 12), will find the film's title character, played by actress Kristen Bell, returning to her native California to investigate a murder.

Veronica Mars was cancelled after three seasons in 2006, but show creator Rob Thomas subsequently wrote a script for a full-length film project. He was initially unable to secure funding, but the idea of reviving the show for a one-off film refused to die and in March last year, Bell and Thomas teamed up to launch a Kickstarter campaign to raise the $2 million (£1.3 million) production budget.

The campaign ended up raising over $5.7 million (£3.7 million) and shooting on the movie is due to begin today (June 17). Alongside Bell, a raft of original Veronica Mars cast members including Chris Lowell, Sam Huntington, Jason Dohring, Percy Daggs III and Logan Echolls are all confirmed to return.
