'Game Of Thrones' casts key new season four role
New character Prince Oberyn Martell aka The Red Viper will be played by Chilean actor Pedro Pascal
Game Of Thrones has cast a significant new character joining for season four.
The role of Prince Oberyn Martell, familiar from the original novels by George RR Martin, will be played by Chilean actor Pedro Pascal. Pascal's CV includes recurring roles on US TV series The Good Wife, Graceland and Red Widow.
Prince Oberyn Martell is also known as The Red Viper. In the novels, he's a lusty, hot-headed character with a quick wit and sharp tongue who's rumoured to be bisexual.
Discussing the casting process, showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss told Entertainment Weekly: "This was a tough one. The Red Viper is sexy and charming, yet believably dangerous; intensely likeable, yet driven by hate. The boys love him, the girls love him, and he loves them all back. Unless your last name is Lannister.
"We found a fellow who can handle the job description and make it seem effortless," the duo added. "He wasn't easy to find and he won't be easy to stop.”
Season three of Game Of Thrones ended earlier this month (June) and filming on season four will begin in July. The new episodes will air in 2014.
