'Gravity' director linked to JK Rowling's 'Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them'

Gravity director Alfonso Cuarón has been linked to the big screen adaptation of Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them.

Just last week Warner Bros confirmed a release date of November 18, 2016 for the film, which is based on a 54-page book written by author JK Rowling in 2001. However, casting and a director have yet to be confirmed.

Empire reports that Cuarón could return to the world of Harry Potter for the first time since he directed The Prisoner Of Azkaban in 2004.

The film is expected to focus on fictional "magizoologist" author Newton Scamander and reports suggest it will be set in New York 70 years before Potter began at Hogwarts. It is also believed to be the first in a trilogy.

David Heyman – who served as producer on all eight of the Harry Potter films – will act as producer on Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them.

Explaining the film's premise last year, Rowling said: "Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for 17 years, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt's story will start in New York, 70 years before Harry's gets underway."
