'Happy-Go-Lucky' actress Sally Hawkins joins 'Godzilla' cast

Happy-Go-Lucky actress Sally Hawkins has been cast as a scientist in the new Godzilla movie.

Hawkins, who recently starred in Constellations, has been given the final lead role in the monster movie, which has already begun shooting in Vancouver, reports Deadline.

The full cast for the blockbuster reboot, which is being shot in 3D, has now been officially confirmed. Kick Ass actor Aaron Johnson will star alongside Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston, Oscar winner Juliette Binoche and Elizabeth Olsen from Martha Marcy May Marlene. David Strathairn (Lincoln) and Ken Watanabe (Inception) also have key roles.

At present, character descriptions and plot details are being kept under wraps, but Olsen is believed to be playing Johnson's girlfriend, with Cranston appearing as his stepfather. Speaking in February, Olsen said of the reboot: "It's definitely not lighthearted. It's kind of going back to its roots of the original Japanese film."

The new Godzilla movie is being helmed by British director Gareth Edwards, who made his name with 2010's Monsters, an acclaimed sci-fi flick shot for just $500,000 (£308,000). Warner Bros has set a release date of May 16, 2014.

Godzilla began as an Japanese film franchise that ran for 28 pictures between 1954 and 2004. The giant monster has also starred in comic books, novels, TV series and video games. Independence Day director Roland Emmerich helmed a previous Hollywood remake in 1998, but it was poorly received.
