Idris Elba has started shooting Luther's upcoming two-part special, which is due to air on BBC One later in the year.

His co-stars in the special will include Game Of Thrones actors Rose Leslie and Patrick Malahide, Fortitude's Darren Boyd, The Inbetweeners Movie actress Laura Haddock and Ripper Street's John Heffernan.

Michael Smiley and Dermot Crowley will reprise their roles as Benny Silver and DSU Martin Schenk, the BBC confirmed in a press release, but there is no mention of Ruth Wilson returning as Alice Morgan.

BBC America marked the start of production on the special yesterday (March 3) by tweeting a picture of Elba on set in east London.
The BBC's synopsis for the two-part special teases: "Luther's back. Pitted against his most chilling adversary yet, haunted by the ghosts of his past and hell-bent on retribution, he's drawn into a terrifyingly complex case that pushes him closer to the edge than he's ever been."

Created and written by Neil Cross, Luther began on BBC One in 2010 and the third and most recent series aired in 2013. The show has also been a hit in the US, and in 2012 Elba won a Golden Globe for his performance in the title role.

A US remake of Luther is in the works, it was announced in November (2014), though Elba won't be reprising his role for the American version.
