Irvine Welsh to write 'Spring Breakers' sequel
'Trainspotting' author teams up with Jonas Åkerlund on follow up to 2012 movie
Details of a Spring Breakers sequel have been revealed.
The Harmony Korine-directed film came out in 2012 and featured James Franco and Vanessa Hudgens in starring roles. Total Film reports that production company Wild Bunch has a film titled Spring Breakers: The Second Coming on its slate for Cannes, though no release date has been confirmed.
Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh is writing the script while Jonas Åkerlund, best known for directing music videos for the likes of Lady Gaga and The Prodigy, will direct. Rumours on the plot are scant but it is believed the girl gang led by Hudgens' character will do battle with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them.
"It’s not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original," says Wild Bunch co-chief Vincent Maraval.
No casting decisions have been announced yet, though Maraval says there will be a mix of old and new faces in the movie.
