Jackie Chan to appear in ‘The Expendables 3’

Martial arts star says he signed up on the condition that appears in 'more than just a minor role'

Jackie Chan is to feature in the next adventure from Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables.

Chan broke the news at a press conference for his new movie CZ12, which was attended by Cinema Online. He revealed: “Sly had invited me to be in The Expendables 2 but I was too busy filming CZ12 and couldn’t make a commitment to the film. But he did extend his invitation to the third movie, which I agreed on the condition that I will be appearing as more than just a minor role with a few scenes.”

Chan added that the script for The Expendables 3 is currently being worked on to meet his criteria. CZ12 – a Hong Kong action flick which Chan wrote, directed and stars in – has just had its worldwide premiere in Beijing. The film’s UK release date is currently unconfirmed.

Back in November (2012), it was reported that Nicolas Cage had joined the cast for The Expendables 3, but Stallone quickly dismissed this rumour. Producer Avi Lerner had previously revealed that Cage was on his wish list for the movie – alongside Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood, Wesley Snipes and Mickey Rourke.

Released in 2010, the original The Expendables film teamed Stallone with a raft of ageing action heroes, including Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mickey Rourke. The tongue-in-cheek action flick became an unexpected hit at the box office, grossing over $274 million (£174 million) worldwide.

The Expendables 2 added Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris to the muscle-bound mix, but Rourke chose to sit it out. The sequel opened in cinemas this August (2012) and has beaten the original at the box office, with worldwide takings exceeding $289 million (£180 million). The Expendables 3 is currently in development.
