James McAvoy has landed the title role in the forthcoming Frankenstein film from Sherlock director Paul McGuigan.

He'll play Doctor Victor Von Frankenstein to Daniel Radcliffe's Igor, Deadline reports, after Radcliffe signed up to portray the hunchbacked assistant earlier this year (2013).

The film has a script by Chronicle writer Max Landis and is said to offer a "revisionist" take on Mary Shelley's classic horror novel, telling the story through the eyes of Igor.

McAvoy apparently landed the role of the mad scientist ahead of Toby Kebbell (Wrath of The Titans, Black Mirror) and Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire, both of whom had tested for the part.

Meanwhile, McAvoy will next be seen as a corrupt cop with a coke habit in the big screen adaptation of Irvine Welsh's Filth, which opens in Scottish cinemas on September 27 before getting a release across the UK and Ireland on October 4. You can watch a NSFW trailer for the movie here.
